Hi Guys,

Just looking for input here. I've taken a stab at writing a band sales document for my new band and have included the text which describes it here.

If you were a punter or a publican, would this make you want to put the demo into your CD player??

"The 8Balls is the name and Rock’n’Roll is the game. Formed in November 2003, this dynamic four piece is quickly establishing a reputation for rockin’ good times.

Today’s audiences are sick of the grunge wannabe’s, punk pretenders, and the top 40 try-hards that pollute our favourite watering holes. People want to hear classic songs presented with a driving beat that’s just right for dancing. The 8Balls offer an exciting mix of classic Rock’n’Roll and swing that is guaranteed to get the place pumping.

Let The 8 Balls take you on a cruise through the best parts of Rock’n’Rollville. From the uptown swing of Louis Jordan to the swamp rhythms of Creedence Clearwater Revival this is one boss ride. Roll with The Stones and strut with The Stray Cats. Ride shotgun with Chuck Berry as you take in the south side of Chicago blues. You’ll be so gone with Rockabilly Fever you might never come back!

The 8Balls play with all the grit and ragged glory of the original artists. These guys are not self-indulgent navel gazers - they really perform. The sheer electricity this band creates is guaranteed to wake the dead!

So if your function, pub, or party needs real rockin’ action, not guys who oughtta be in traction, there is only one name to remember:

The 8Balls"

All comments are welcome.

Thanks,

Mark

Thanks Steve,

I'll take that as a thumbs up! You are welcome to sit in with the band anytime. That is if you can keep up with songs that have more than two chords!!! :-}

Cheers,

Mark

Mark,

I play in a busy function band and we also have produced handouts similar to yours. May I suggest that you drop or, at least reword the second paragraph. It's a little bit too subjective and may offend some potential clients. Also, try and remain open about what you are trying to sell rather than pigeon hole yourself.

For instance, sometimes clients want us to learn a special song or tune that is totally out of the bands style or we just don't know. We charge them £50 per song extra for the privilege but it's a useful note to put on your CV.

Hi Six,

I am actually trying to pidgeon hole our band to appeal almost exclusively to the rock'n'roll market. There is a luctrative niche out there that includes old time rockers, jive and swing dancers and rockabillies that support such bands.

The subjective second paragraph is worded to appeal to that market's sensibilities and musical prejudices. The remainder of the document is aimed at differentiating us from other rock'n'roll bands out there. Most are old boring farts playing nice cabaret style who would think tube amp breakup is something that happens when your amp falls off the back of a truck!

Cheers,

Mark

Okay Okay, you win! :) But if the Dad paying for the party/wedding (or what have you) is a grunge freak...well he just might turn his nose up.

As far as the cabaret acts go, we have a local guy around here. He's a keyboard player and transposes everything into "C". It's sooo aggravating!!

Perhaps we can exchange band CD's? and I'll mail you a copy of our handout too.

Good Gawd! Blues in "C"! Blasphemy! I feel your pain, Six :(

Munch, I think you're doing the right thing as far as focus is concerned. You guys obviously have some experience and know where you wanna be musically. However, as Six pointed out, you ain't gonna get the wedding gigs for the grunge crowd. Not that that's any great loss in my book :)

Cheers

Mark,
A great tag line and promo material is all well and good but in my experience there is no better advert than the proverbial "word of mouth" . The best buzz is from the unsolicited fan's lips , not necessarily your written promo. Get a following and the rest will follow. Not that clever marketing hasn't "made" a band on it's own more than once, but at the end of the night ya gotta have them crying for one more song. Just my 2 cents worth.

Hey Mark,

You are dead right! However, when a band is just starting out without any gigs, word of mouth is non-existent. You have to create some excitement and desire in the first intance to gain initial bookings.

From there the strength of your performances in public venues will lead to enquiries for more bookings, mostly in the private market such as functions and parties.

Furthermore, word of mouth can only go so far. There is a much broader market out there that can be easily tapped into. I plan on producing A5 two sided fliers that contains the above bio (with some refinements I've made) and contact details. These fliers will be placed on windscreens of cars at all the touring band and blues gigs that come to Adelaide. The word will definitely get out to our niche and plenty of enquiries will flow.

Well, thats the plan anyway!!

Cheers and thanks,

Mark

Hey Mr Roadstar,

What's wrong with blues in C? How about Sweet Home Chicago and Sray Cat Strut for starters!

Cheers,
