Back in May '03 there was a message left by Paul Alcantara in the Vintage & Custom Electrics section, entitled: 2617 FEATURE

Paul was doing research on the venerable 2617 model for an article he was writing for the Guitar Buyer magazine. Even though one copy was lost in the mail, Paul was able to get me a copy of the July issue that contained the 2617 article.

First off, you Brits should be very proud. The guitar Buyer issue I got had interviews with Mark Knopfler, Zak Wylde and Jimi Ward (who's he? read the mag.:)) There was a cool artilce on Jimi Hendrix's 69/70 Flying V and an interview with Dominic Miller, a session guitartist that has worked with Sting, among other famous artists.

Overall the mag is very nicely done and filled with lots of great photos of guitars and gear. And that's exactly what it's focused on; there are no columns about how to play and no tabs of songs.

The article on the 2617 is much more than a cursory intro. The forum denizen would be very proud to read how Paul recounts the evolution of the early "replicas only" Ibanez into the the "original designs". Of sourse, the 2617 was a founding member of that club. Paul also mentions some other high-end models of the time, but without pictures, the beauty of the 2672 is lost. (That's why we have the Guitar Tours section.)

Hey, there are 5 pages devoted to this article (Mark Knopfler's article only went 2 pages!) and there are some great photos of his brownburst Ash Artist, as well as catalog shots of the early Artists.

And last, but not least, there are photos of Mr_Ibanez's (our own Orval Engling) collection of five 2617s, that span three years of production. (Orval seems to own five of every collectible Ibanez, doesn't he? :))

Hats off to Paul and Guitar Buyer mag. You did the feature on the 2617, and early Ibanez, right!

John... Like Dave G I'd also love to see the article so if you can post it I would be most obliged - I have a '77 2617 Dark Scruggs [I'm the original owner] and would like an idea of where it sits in the evolution of Ibanez

Hey John,

Just out of interest, I was the original owner of that brownburst 2617 featured in Paul's article. I sold it to Paul to part finance a 59' historic Les Paul! (Oh the shame). Anyway Paul is a very nice chap and it went to a good home.

I also supplied Paul with all information in the column regarding hardware and spare parts numbering. Apparently the Editor forgot to credit me (A**hole!). This information is based on the spares catalogue I rescued in the late 70's.

Paul seemed to think that the spares catalogue could be a UK print but I doubt it. All the numbering is typical Ibanez and I believe it was definately produced and printed by Ibanez in Japan.

I've found this catalogue very useful over the years and I got to thinking that it would be a help to all of us if I scan the pages and post themn up somewhere on the site. Then again, taking my PC skills into consdieration it may be better if I send the whole catalogue to you in the post John and you could create a section for it somewhere.

When you have finished with it you can mail it back to me.

How does that sound?

Skipper!

Your friend at the mag wouldn't be the Editor by any chance would he?

No Six, I will keep his identity masked. He is not the editor. He is a very close personal friend who used to be talent relations for Peavey in the U.K and is now enjoying what he likes doing best...guitar journalism. This good friend of mine has had the pleasure of touring Australia doing guitar ( EVH Wolfgang ) and amp clinics for Peavey in Australia. We are in contact all the time and he has been on board the Starship Ibanez on numerous occasions to go through the Captain's vast archives of Ibanez, and he know's where to come to for info.

Cameron :)
