Freak:

I agree. I'd love to see better photos of that top. The bridge looks just like the "ST" bridges used on the FujiGen guitars.

I think Dave_G is into these babies.

BTW, I believe that "SLM" on the truss rod cover stands for "St. Louis Music", the importer.

Freak, VERY nice guitars, the next IBANEZ. This model is the Jazz Strad, a color/inlay combination that Electra repeated on both the 335 clone and a LP, both with clear pickguards to show off the subtle flame. All the build quality of an Ibanez, 1/2 the price......goofy headstock shape .....

John..You are correct SLM=St Louis Music..AKA Crate (of the amplifier fame)

I'm no expert, but I thought Electra was made by Matsumoku (if I spelled that correctly, anyway).

Heres some picts of the "Jazz Strad" Model x410

Cool torquise bindings and triangle inlays. The "Super Magnaflux" PUPS are KILLER. Electra had several models of 335 clones. Elvin Bishop "Fooled around and fell in Love" was an endorser for the vine inlay version in the AV color, the model is refered to as the Maple Pro in natural. The Natural ones are stunning with highly figured flame tops, side and back. They also made a "Pro" model without F holes which is a very cool guitar. All Electra's of the late 70's had brass nuts and SOLID brass bridges stock. This example is a '77

Dave_g & Tonedef - Electra's Rickenbacker bass copy was identical to Ibanez' 2388b - with all the oddities of that model - tiny checked binding, full-width glitter inlays, small chrome humbuckers etc

As far as I know, the Ibanez bass was definitely Fuji Gen - so I assume at least some Electras were made there.

Maybe, BA, but I don't think so. Of course, with the Japanese industry being as it was, I suppose it is possible.

Dave G, I hope that X410 is yours, it is, as you say, stunning!

I have a Phoenix bass, which is pretty cool, but nothing like some of the beautiful gear that Elektra turned out.

Tone....Thanks ! Been on the Electra kick for around 5 years now, best years of production were '76-82 or so. I have examples of just about every guitar they ever produced (some 60 guitars). My favorite is the Maple Pro (Sick natural flamed maple top with T-O-L inlays)and the Pro Endorser (LP type with a 3/4 bookmatched flame maple top, smooth heel, ebony board, Super Magaflux split 'buckers)..These guitars are an awesome bargin (much less so than a couple of years ago). I think the goofy headstock shape (Hofner like)turns a lot of collectors off, keeping prices low. The earlier (pre 1976) "Lawsuit" headstocks to generate more interest and higher prices. To confuse things even more, Electra had not only a third headstock shape (a "Transition"), but an entire other company on the west coast with the same name (different logo) that was opened by a family relative as a competitior. The West Coast Electras (so called "X" Electras after the unique logo) are of a cheaper build and are not as desireable by collectors.

Dave G, you sly dog! That is way too cool. I just got on the Electra bandwagon lately, and you are right, they are the real deal. If you come across a cool bass too good to pass up, or can copy any of their literature for me, drop me a note.

Here's some more info on the Evin Bishop with Vine model.

http://www.rivercityamps.com/electra/elvin.php

It appears that there were two runs, with very different serial numbering systems. The bottom 2281 has a FujiGen style number.

What do you think Dave, could some of these Electras have been made by Fuji?

Bass-A,
As per the resident guru of all things Electra--no solid evidence as of yet, but he does believe you are right and that some Electra's were made by Fuji-Gen. I wonder if that worked in reverse, Uncle Matt Ibanez'...?

My '80 Aria Pro II Thor Sound TS-300 also has a serial number with a letter prefix a la Ibanez, so I wouldn't put huge stock in that being an indication of Fujigen manufacture. Its stamped into the "Made by Matsumoku" labelled neck plate. Why some Matsumoku serials used letters, and most didn't, is an obvious question.

What a lovely set of machine heads, Dave. Grover Imperial type made by???

I guess they're hard to find. If you break one of them, you have a problem, right?
