Like a ICW member told me- popsicle sticks.*Dont know if it will do witch hats though? I think i removed strat style knobs w/ p.sticks- pretty close??You might wana put a thin cloth under the witch hat as far as you can so you dont scratch the guitar.Maybe s/one else has some ideas??? Good luck!

Chisel and a 7Ib clump hammer works fine.

Just kidding

I've tried hair driers and WD40 amongst other things. Some new ideas would be handy.

Don't remember where this tip came from , but I have been doing it this way for years...

Just take an old T shirt and -using the edge (waist where the cloth folded over and sewn) and wrap it around the base of the knob. Twist the entire shirt around until its nice and tight and frigin pull gently moving slightly from side to side...easy as that

Jazzzbo:

Your wish is my command! See the newly created "The Guitarist's Workshop" section.

Actually, creating this new section has been on the back burner for a few months. Thanks for kicking me in the butt to finally get around to it.

I use two spoons to remove them. The curve on the back side of the spoon is nice and smooth and usually won't mar the finish as you pry each side up with gentle and even pressure. However, it might not be bad to use some styro wrap under the spoons.

Then when you're done, you can do a little jig with the spoons

Hey, John,

Why don't you move this thread (the one we're in, that is) to the new section.

I have an acoustic thread that might be moved to: http://www.ibanezcollectors.com/discus/messages/11 /1902.html?1179367060

Best wishes, and thanks for keeping this site going. I'm really enjoying it.

I tested the T-shirt idea and now I have a lot of loose knobs. How do I get them fastened again?

Don't panic!

The Knobs don't change much, but the pot shafts can.

If push-on knobs get loose, take a small flat blade screwdriver (a butter knife works too) and gently, GENTLY open the split in the shaft. GENTLY !! Over do it and you'll fatigue the metal.

I tap the screwdriver gently (there's that word, again) with a small mallet or the handle of another screwdriver. It takes some time to get the feel for it.

Obviously this does NOT apply to solid shaft pots with set-screw knobs.

You can use the chisel and 7Ib clump hammer on this job too.

Hell, Six, why not bust out the air hammer?

I must confess ignorance. Clump hammer? Never heard that term. Sledge, maul, BFH, NASCAR precision body tool, those i know...

Bear

'Clump' is usually half the weight of a 14 pounder and has a small dumpy shaft slightly smaller than a regular engineers hammer. For those slightly more stubborn jobs y'know...

Any help picturing that?

We often refer to that type of tool as a "persuader".

Unfortunately, I went with a 'persuader' on an original split-shaft pot on my 2681... now I have a 'half-shaft'.

Any suggestions???

Did you miss the part about "gently"?

Other than replacing the pot, I don't know of a fix that doesn't make the a permanent resident.
