HOW TO REMOVE SHARP FRET EDGES

Author Message   Telstar Username: Telstar Registered: 4-2006 Posted on Monday, June 04, 2007 - 3:24 pm:    I've had several guitars, specially older guitars, that suffer from wood shrinkage, with the result that the frets stick out of the fretboard just a little. Moving up and down the neck feels uncomfortable and can even cause wounds in the hand. Using a metal-file on its own is dangerous: it's easy to damage the fretboard when you slip off the fret into the wood. You need something to make sure you won't do that. Off to the dining room! Get yourself a normal fork and hold it on the fretboard with the teeth around the fret, hollow side down. Use a small square file, about 2 mm a side, stuck between the teeth to file down the fret. The fork will prevent the file from slipping off the fret and you'll be able to remove the sharp edges safely. Ahhh forget it six   Guitarwhisperer Username: Guitarwhisperer Registered: 6-2007 Posted on Sunday, June 10, 2007 - 7:29 pm:    I use the flat diamond sharpening stone very lightly on the protruding tangs until they're flush, then I de-burr the crowns with the Small triangular three corner file with the corners ground smooth. then I buff the fretboard edges to make it shiny again. The diamond file is very fine and barely touches the laquer.
