I think we're all agreed that he's recycling the same old riffs now, but when the band started out around 1969 they were HUGE and a real breath of fresh air. The first three albums were quite stunning and among my collection of favourite CDs, those three and Caravanserai form my current collection of Santana CDs. It all went pear-shaped for me whith the release of Amigos when he first dipped his toes into the murky waters of Disco. However, the sublime track Europa is still one of my favourite tunes of his. The Welcome album on which Carlos collaborated with John Mclaughlin on the track Love Devotion And Surrender left me cold. Other albums I used to own were Borboletta and Moonflower. I can't remember any of the tracks on Borboletta, but Moonflower had some decent songs on it among the live tracks and disco-dross. It's interesting to listen to the evolution of his tone on those early albums, I thought he was a reasonable singer too. He decided to hand over the singing duties starting with the Moonflower album, Carlos and I agreed to go our seperate ways shortly thereafter. Oh yes, on the third album, there's a great duel on the opening track Batuka between Carlos and a 16-year old Neil Schon. Neil lasted up until the Caravanserai album, then I think Carlos decided the kid was getting too good and probably gave him his marching orders.   Talajuha Username: Talajuha Registered: 11-2006 Posted on Tuesday, July 03, 2007 - 7:59 am:    Moonflower, the piece of music, is very beautiful. Nobody had ever heard of them, and they blew Cippolina & his boys off the stage & played for 3 hours. I was in the light show, and helped with roadie stuff when Santana showed up behind the basketball court in a big black Dodge van. They had a lot of equipment, but halfway through Carlos said it was time for a "safety meeting" in the van. I thought he was about the nicest guy I'd ever met in any band. A couple hours later, I also thought he was the hottest guitar player I'd ever seen! He can record three blind mice, and I'll like it.   Agr Username: Agr Registered: 10-2003 Posted on Friday, July 27, 2007 - 12:17 am:    I use to play with a "basement" band back in the late 80s and every time we played Europa we gathered a crowd from the neighberhood. I think that by then many had never heard the song and just marveled at the melody. It took me some time to get the "nuances" of his riffs down but it was worth it. Mostly I learned feel and phrasing from him. Not much on scales n harder stuff though..I lost contact with him after the 3rd or fourth album. I think it was when he was called devadip. The "Love, Devotion, Surrender album" was awesome with john.
