Captain:

Can you set us straight on the AM205 Special Edition. Is there anything (besides the graphite nut) that makes this different from the run-of-the-mill AM205? Like was there really a higher quality burl mahogany used?

See: Vintage & Custom Electrics: Ibanez AM205 SPECIAL EDITION

Thanks,

John, from the photo's posted on that thread, it looks like a normal AM205 with a black nut ( graphite or plastic ) instead of a ivory nut. Personally, I have not seen the so called Special Edition model before, but one would think that if it was a Special Edition it would have a inlay in the neck stating this.Seems to me that someone may have been dupped here !. Trouble is John , each one of these guitars that we have had here over the years are all individuals as far as the Burl mahogany grains went. So sorry to say with the photo's at hand, this is the only explanation I can give

Hi guys,

maybe the Guitar pictured in that thread is actually a 'Super Edition'. There was such a guitar on Ebay Germany recently that also featured a black nut. Unfortunately a previous owner installed a switch on the pickguard.

Hi Orval, I think this one will have to be solved by the records in japan. I think this is a another sample of spot production at work. I feel this is a European market release only.

Should have a answer in a few days :)

My '87 AM205 Super Edition just came in. Features I noticed when comparing it to my other AM's are graphite nut, a different shaped truss rod cover and yes, the "horns" are less pointy than my AM50 but kind of close to my 255. The wood looks comparable to the 255 also. The sunburst effect is not as pronounced as the edge is not very dark. The biggest surprise is the profile of the neck which is very thin and more "D" shaped than every Ibanez I've owned. Lastly, it weighs 10 oz. more than the AM50 and is 4 oz. lighter than the 255.

As the Captain say's...a picture is worth a thousand words....I'd say a great tag team effort on sorting out the differences on the 2 models..still waiting on a answer to the build numbers from Japan.
