I have an Oct '76 Destroyer that is a transparent cherry color with a black pickguard. Both seem to be original (in my very amateur opinion). Did they ever make on that wasn't korina with white pickguard? Any info would be appreciated. It is, by the way, a great player, even despite the fact that the thing weighs more than I do!

Gregb, no they only made the Korina finish in the 1976 law suites. I would say some previous owner has had it re-finished...but hey what the hell..it's different to say the least but sadly not original.

Thanks for the info. I had a feeling that it had been re-finished at some time, but couldn't be sure. At least someone did a pretty decent job of it, and, if nothing else it is a pretty damn good playing and sounding guitar.

Are you sure? I thought they did lawsuit copies of the more "current" Gibson flying V designs as well as the korina ones - I have seen them in red. Post some photos of your guitar, maybe that will help.

Hi Ericsson
You are partly right. Hoshino made copies of the '67 flying V in mahogany finish as well, but only korina Explorers. At that time, no other finish Explorer was known. Only later on, in the 80's, Ibanez made a sunburst "Destroyer" with tigerstripe top that looked like an Explorer.

Kind greetz,
Harry

Sorry about the lack of pictures, I'm trying to figure out how to post them. For some reason, I can't get them loaded. As soon as I figure out how to do it, I'll get them posted.

Thanks Harry. That's what I was thinking of. Sorry for the confusion!

Ericsson are you talking about a Destroyer 2?

No, like Harry said, I was thinking of the lawsuit '67 V (usually in red I think) and somehow it morphed in my mind into an Explorer!
