I just noticed there are four screws missing on the control plate. Those hold part of the active EQ electronics in place. This is what it looks like under my MC900NT's hood:

Those big capacitors and primitive looking resistors are what's responsible for the great warmth and useability of the tone controls. The shrunken down microcaps and microresistors sound harsh and sterile compared to these things, and also seem to have more thermionic hiss. Full size components to me sound so much nicer.
