Hi there. You guys seem to know your stuff so please help! I bought an Ibanez bass on ebay the other day and would love some more information on it... well as much as possible really.

What I can tell you is that it bears a plate on the headstock which reads "Artist" (could be artist series then!) and that the serial number on the back of the headstock is J766428.

The bass has 2 pick ups, 2 volume and one tone knob, pick up toggle switch and what I believe to be an ash body. No scratch plate or anything like that. Can anyone let me know when this was made, how good it's reckoned to be and have a guess at a value?

Hopefully the pics can be viewed from the above link... if not I shall attempt to load them up later.

Thanks a lot, Andy

Andy:

We've seen a couple of these very cool Artist basses. The documentation is very skimpy, if not non-existent. It's mentioned in the 1977 Price List (US) as:

2626B Artist II Bass, Ash Body------>$450.00

I got a picture of one at a recent guitar show outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Dealer was Olivia's Vintage. Here's the picture I took.
2626Bass

They subsequently had it up on ebay. Can't remember if it was sold or not. They put lots of great pictures on the Ibanez Register website. Check it out:

Mr. Ibanez (Orval to us ICW members) owns one. Here's a link to his site:

Hope this helps.
