I'm a guitar player, but I like to have a bass around for recording or impromptu jam sessions. I have an EDB400, which is probably OK for what I use it for. But I kind of want something nicer, and I want a 5 string. I've heard the late '80s early '90s MIJ soundgears with the body color necks are great. Exotic natural wood basses also make me smile. What do you guys think?

Funkle, I'm a big fan of the BTB series bases. They start at a low price point Korean model series (4 and 5 string), and go up to the high-end MIJ Prestige models with Bartolini's. Great quality, active/passive electronics and pickups. I recommend trying one out beforehand, however. They do have a slightly wider neck profile than other Ibanez basses. |

...and a slightly longer scale length (35") which makes them slightly less easy to play (higher string tension, wider distance between the frets). I started out as a guitar player, but now play bass as well. I have no trouble with 35" (I own a Yamaha TRB5II), but I have fairly large hands. So I'd have to agree with Tim, try one out beforehand  |

35" scale means a more solid low B, right? How do the Korean basses compare to the MIJ ones?
The BTBs look nice. I have always liked the lines of the Soundgears. I have been checking out some SR885s. They seem like a good deal. MIJ, thinner neck, 3 band EQ with sweepable mid. |

Yo, Funk~Here is a BTB Limited Edition similar to one I scored last year. This one is natural finish, and mine is honeyburst. Only a few of these were made by the Japan guys. Either way, I highly recommend this bad boy.
Yes, it's 35" scale and takes about 5 whole minutes to get used to, but trust me, it's got the best bang for buck mojo I've come across in a while. This seller has had it up on Ebay off and on a bunch and the price keeps dropping! (Nope, I'm not affiliated with the seller.)

Sweet looking bass! However, the string-to-string distance looked too wide for me.
I checked his other auctions and he has an interesting 8 string bass...for the overly ambitious, 8-fingered rockers among us.

Wow, that last 8-string is interesting. Is that both a fretted AND a fretless 4-string on one neck or something?
By the way, if you think THAT was insane, check this image of Gary Goodman out. Or this incredible (yet hideous) work of art. Are those monsters or what?

John, that 1306 looks awesome. I had a SR1206 for a while, and I really have no need for a 6 string. But I like the low B on a 5 string. It's not that hard to play if you are a guitar player.

I got my new SR885 over the weekend. It is a pretty sweet bass, and is in good shape aside from a broken stacked tone knob and non-original vol and blend knobs. The neck is very easy to play. I'm a happy camper for $300. Hopefully it won't take too long for the replacement parts to arrive. |
