What started you collecting Ibanez guitars??

I received in the mail today, the reason for my obsession with these instruments. I am certain that all of the members were tired of seeing my threads looking for an MC980, knowing that whoever had one wouldn't sell it anyway. Today my dream came true.
bass

I have found not only my favorite collectible piece, but a specimen that looks like it has been in a museum for the last 26 years. Aside from a bit of surface corrosion on the bridge and saddles, this beauty is about 98% perfect.

I saw Sting playing an Ibanez Musician bass in one of my brothers Police videos and I became hooked. I found every picture I could, pre-internet, searched every music store until I found old guitar mags. My best friend found my 1st mC924 for me at a swap meet, I had to drive to athens ohio and pay a whopping 300.00 for it in 1995 at age 17. So I ask all of you, share a short story on how you became hooked. Hopefully, we all will find the one we want someday!!!

Sweet 8 string Musician bass! My brother has one that he plays as a 4 string. Great neck!!

And he too refuses to even consider selling it.

Hummmmm...Weird, I have seen a lot of those brass bridges as replacements sold in the early 80's when everyone was going brass crazy. Perhaps Ibanez outsourced the 8 string bass parts due to the limited production ? None the less its an awsome git....very cool that you got yer "holy grail"...I'm still on a quest for mine ! (2672)

For me, it was the Sabre. That's what Frank Gambale and Scott henderson played. In the '70s and '80s, I was really only into Fender and Gibson. Then when I got back into guitar in the '90s I bought the guitar I had lusted after during my college years but could not afford: a green S470, which Mr. Roadstar now owns (or owned)

I'm embarrassed to say, I had no idea that Ibanez made anything other than super-strats until I joined this board. Then the whole vicious cycle started. Now, about 30 Ibanez later, I've sold off all my S series guitars and prefer Ibanez more meaty, or more hollow designs.

Just yesterday I was drooling over a very nice & original MC980 in a little bass shop in Newcastle On Tyne, UK.

Didn't dare ask how much it was...

Hey Bassassin,

Since it was his hometown, perhaps that one belonged to Sting!!!!!

It's been nice checking out those beautiful MC980s. I'm not familiar with many bassists who play 8-strings-- anybody have suggestions of some good bands/albums to check out w/ 8 string bass action? (Ibanez players or otherwise)

my first "real" bass was a '83 Roadstar 2 bass, 32" scale (12/1993). my parents bought it from my first bass teacher who refinished. i've since refinished it once or twice and replaced the tuners and pickup.

my next was a '79 Roadster fretless bass i scored at a pawnshop for $110

then on my senior prom night (may 1997) i found my '85 Roadstar 2 bass in white (single P pickup). i eventually stripped the white paint and finished it in a cherryish color. it is due for another in the future.

my other ibanez's are a BTB405 5 string bass in trans black which is awesome.

and my main bass is a BTB1006EOL 6 string bass. absolutely beautiful. score it at MF for $799 when they were liquidating them in 2004.

i have 2 non-ibanez (dean edge Q5 and Michael Kelly DragonFly 5 fretted)

As far as Ibanez basses go, I've NEVER played one as sweet and versatile as the BTB5CPD Ltd.Ed!

check out http://www.clatter.com

she plays 12-string and a rick. No twangers either. just bass, drums (and the bass player sings too).

My first Ibanez bass was a second hand Roadstar II RB630 (white PB model with a black pickguard and a rosewood fretboard and a black headstock built by Fuji Gen Gakki), which was my second bass, after my Aria Cardinal CB300 (Matsumoku).
Bought at a pawn shop and kept it ever since, the Matsumoku though had to go...
The RB630 is a fantastic swinging and warm sounding passive bass, so it needs no battery.

The first real vintage Ibanez guitar is my 2355m from 1976, which inspired me to do a lot of internet research. First I found five or six websites, where the 2355 models were represented. Most showed a picture of a sunburst that was sold for $1250.- or $1350.- by some American dealer.
The best site on the 2355 was Smooth's 2355 site, which showed Sixvsix's 2355m, which was identical to mine, but missed the pickguard.
Mine is MINT, and I mean MINT AS MINT CAN BE, whith OHSC.
I would say this is my top piece, if we're talking about collecting.

My top player Ibanez, is my Artstar AS120 sunburst, made by Cort, probably in 2000 (terrible handwritten serial number) with Super 58's.
It is also MINT, but I took the original black pickguard off and installed a bound tortoise one.
This is my best semi-acoustic (I have 6).

For collectors my 1983 AM50 sunburst (also mint + OHSC) is more valuable, but it has a totally different character.

And then there's my Andorra GA300S, which is the sweetest sounding classical guitar I own (among a dozen of others or so).

You see: I love them all, but it was the 2355m that made me a real Ibanez fanatic with her blonde flames. Not the first, not the last, but pure stunning beauty.

So now I am an Ibanez addict.

It's funny for me I always have a 'pending' Holy grail bass.

Seems as soon as I get the Holy grail Bass, a new one comes along.

It started with a ICB300 Iceman, then a T-Bird, then a Black Eagle.

Now I want a pre-EB Stingray.

For me there is always a Holy Grail waiting somewhere.

Oh, and I discovered my AS120 is from 1997.
