The guy I bought it from had no clue what he had  . I paid $300 canadian for it (about $250 USD) , cleaned it up, put some new strings and plugged it into my Eden. It sounds HUGE !!!! It's got a super deep tone but with a lot of growl. Pretty versatile. Great for both slapping and fingerstyle.
Better than my 78 Fender Precision 
Still I need to find a solution for the pickguard. I might get a few black ones blanks from WD Products and try to duplicate it. |

I grabbed this one cause I had never seen a studio in a Cherry Burst before. The guitar is a player and a great deal at less than $200 delivered to my house (no case  )
The guitar cleaned up great, it has a couple of pretty severe edge damages-but the hardware shined up nice...I replaced the black grovers with the appropriate vintage tuners and pulled the Duncan and V2 and replaced them both with a NOS pair of Super Magnaflux (Electra)..These pups meter at 13.5 OMS and are super hot.
I think it looks great , sounds AWESOME and is a joy to play with a dead on straight neck with just the right amount of relief (it did need a little TR tweak)and nice tight action.
This guitar is an '81 and its clear that Ibanez was beginning to feel a slowdown in business. There are corners cut in the construction of this guitar that were not present on the '79 ST50 that I own.
The control cavity cover is actually screwed ON TOP of the back of the guitar..that is there is no routed bezel for the cover to fit flush into and the beveled plastic is top mounted upside down so that the plastic cover actually sticks up on the back surface of the guitar. How much do you think Ibanez saved by not adding this extra route ? The toggle switch is not on the horn like the ST50, rather it is in the control cavity, eliminating the need for a second control cavity and cover. The input jack is flush mounted instead of a side entry, and there is plenty of room for the side installation.
Even though this model ST70 is better model to the ST50 (the ST70 has individual V&T controls and the ST50 does not)the "cut corners" that the factory was taking a mere 2 years later is amazing and , I think, was a portend to the "Pre Superstrat" troubles that Ibanez was experiencing as popular music went techno and away from guitar orientated music.
I am very pleased with my first 2007 Ibanez buget purchase...now to find a case (ST's are hard to case because the guitar is around 1" longer than most. |
