Hi. I just bought an Ibanez RD 707 fretless bass on eBay. It is a factory fretless 4 string bass. I’ve had a hard time finding out anything about this bass. The one review of the 707 on Harmony-Central is for the fretted model. The reviewer says, "Ibanez service told me the RD707 model was offered only in 1993-4, and was comparable to the more recent SR800 models in price/quality." Does this jive with other people’s experience? I have a fretted SR 1200, which is a great bass. I would like to know more about how the RD 707 is regarded, whether anyone has had experiences with the fretless version, what the production years were, what modifications people made, and so on. Is this bass as much of a rarity as the lack of information would suggest? Thanks for your responses.

Jazz,

Post the serial number so we know what year it was built. I can check my catalogs for more info.

Cheers

I’ll post the serial number as soon as I get the bass–it’s still on the way to me. Thanks!

The serial number on this bass is F 767151. It is made in Japan. Anyone have any info about dates and other tidbits? Where does this bass fit into the larger picture of Ibanez basses?

I make that serial number to be a Fuji Gen Gakki build from 1997. Need to check the '97 catalog for any more info.

Thanks Steve. I'm a little surprised to hear that this bass would be so recent. It looks like it's had plenty of use! Do you have the '97 catalog? I'll be eager to hear more.
Thanks again,
Peter

Yes, I have the catalog. It's just not here at my office. I'll try to remember to look it up tonight.

Peter,

I screwed the pooch... It's not a '97, it's an '87! I don't have any bass literature for '87 or '88, but I did find an RD707 in the Roadbass section of the '89 catalog. The fretless version is model RD707F. Here's the specs:

Basswood body
3-Ply Maple neck
Rosewood fingerboard
Ibanez P/J pickups
Accucast BII bridge
Black or White finish

Cheers

Thanks Steve. 1987 makes a lot more sense. It's in pretty good shape for a bass that age, but it really looks more than 6 years old. Do you know if there are any online locations for Ibanez catalogs?
Thanks,
Peter

Where can I confirm that it's a 1987? Is there a place to look up Ibanez serial numbers?
Thanks

Jazz:

You could try going to www.ibanez.com and see if there is a contact number or email address.

Well I just got this bass professionally set up. It is a very cool bass now--plays really well and puts out some impressive sounds. It was interesting to learn that it is a 1980s bass. Thanks again for helping me identify this.
