The serial number will tell you the date of manufacturer....first letter = month (a=Jan, B=Feb and so on) and the next two numbers is the year....(A79=Jan 1979 build)

I think this guitar is early 80's, but take a look

Thats hard to say cause it looks as if it has been refinished and the neck looks to be quite worn.  Lets let the "collected ICW masses" chime in on this one

This looks like an SB70 to me.
The hybrid between ST and BL series.
1 Sure Grip missing...

I agree with Ginger. It's definitely a SB70. I recently bought one.

It's NOT missing a SG 1 however. They only have 3 knobs. They're wired V-T-T. There's a pu selector and a two position phase switch (I could be wrong - it may be a coil tap) but I'm calling it a phase switch based on mine. I never did hear any tapped sounds coming from mine, although the wiring was faulty. I replaced the entire wiring harness and installed Duncan P-Rails pups. It may be simple & basic, but it's a surprisingly awesome guitar.

I've gigged with it a couple times now and I really like it. Very short scale like a PRS, Super 70's pups (not V2s as originally suspected) great feel & tone, and built like a tank. In terms of simplicity and functionality it's a brilliant guitar IMHO. Only built for around 1 year. Mine is a November of '82 build. Evidently a very transitional model blending traits of the ST and BL as noted by Ginger. It does not appear in any catalog as far as I know.

Also, Dave is right. This one has had the finish sanded off to reveal the wood. I bought mine for $225 with the original hard case. The guitar was all original. I know it t doesn't look like much, but trust me - this guitar will surprise you.
