I know there is a topic on Alex Lifeson, but Rush is an awesome band!  Rush is the band that pushed me towards really learning the guitar and really opened my ears to a lot of good music.  When I first heard Hemispheres I was so blown away by what they were doing.  I've seen them 5 times since the Vapor Trails tour (before that I was too young Grin).

I saw them on Thursday night in Hershey, PA and was third row Geddy's side.  It's amazing all the stuff that he does in addition to just singing those songs.  I was glad to see he had a Moog on stage and also bringing back the Rick for a song.  Alex was awesome and Neil was amazing as usual.

I don't know if anyone saw this last week, but Rush was on the Colbert Report...

Great band and musicians!
I have seen them here in Buffalo 10+ times, just stopped counting.
They were one of the first groups that really got me to dig into playing guitar and music in general!

Patrick, 5 times since Vapor trails? How old are you? Am I feeling my age now?  Grin I have seen them live since around the "Signals" album. (Yes, ALBUM, you know, that big balck round thing...)

I saw Rush maybe eight times? All between the years of 1977 and 1984 (that's "All the World's a Stage" through "Signals" tours). And, that's probably all before Patrick was born.

Now I'm feeling old.... I started listening to them just after 'A Farewell to Kings'. My first Rush concert was Hemispheres and my album was actually an 8 track! It lived in my player and I would pull it out just enough to kill it when I left my room. I'd push it back in and it played non stop for weeks. It was the soundtrack of my life in 78.

I went to their concerts every year (sometimes several nights in a row) for the next 7 years. I caught the last few years on and off (Roll the Bones, Test For Echo, Vapor Trails, R30, Snakes and Arrows). Their style has evolved in different directions over the years, but they are still 'Musicians, musicians', par excellence!

I'm feeling old...

I'm 26.  I got hooked on 'em when I was about 16 and am amazed by just about everything they do.  I bought 'Hold Your Fire' again on CD today, because the copy I had got worn out Cheesy.  Yes, that's right...'Hold Your Fire'.  I'm a die-hard fan Cheesy.

I've got every Rush album on Vinyl except a few later ones (LP, Record, whatever ya' wanna call it  Grin).  That's my other sickness besides GAS Cheesy.

Hold Your Fire, I'll have to dig that one back out!

I like how each album has a new sound and direction. I'm currently in the "Signals" mode myself. Those analog synths, some nice stuff on that record!

Child of '71, you do the math, lol Grin

I was lucky, as my parents let me attend concerts at an early age with my older brothers  Smiley

Signals is such an awesome record!  I think most of you guys know what I think about vintage synths Cheesy Grin Cheesy.  That whole 80s era is amazing.  I totally agree with you Bill in how they reinvented their sound on each record.  I really like the 'Power Windows' & 'Hold Your Fire' era when Geddy really developed his chord/bass technique.

My brothers and I talk about how there's four different Rush eras...70s, 80s, 90s, 00s.   I like all of 'em and I'm glad that they changed over the years.  My first concert was Pearl Jam in Cleveland '98 when I was 16.

I'd give the 70's two eras: Through the first live album and a short era consisting of just Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres. It was with Permanent Waves that Geddy dropped his vocal range. Then again, Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures are a mini-era too, because after that, the synths took over. Hmmm. I don't like the idea of making one era out of Farewell to Pictures, though. Too much change.

Wait, I've got it: Every album is its own era! (That actually works, to some extent.) Each album is a progression from its predecessor. Each album stands on the shoulders of its predecessor, you might say. Dang, Rush is a great band!

The synths were embedded into AFTK and Hemispheres as well, just more organic.  Alex was using the GS/GR-500 on Hemispheres as well as both of them using Taurus pedals.  The sounds in the beginning of Xanadu when Alex is riding the E chord down the high pitch synth sound are actually the Taurus pedals.  A very cool pedal that Moog will probably never reissue due to the costs.

I think Geddy was using a custom built synth at that point too...it's on the cover of Exit Stage Left.

Rush is such a great band.

Real musicians generally suck at it.
I know I did. We can't stop thinking like a player...
