For anyone who's a huge Steve Hackett fan and a guitar synth geek like me, then you have to check out this video on youtube.  It looks to be from the 'Spectral Mornings' tour.  A very cool video of Prog and vintage Roland GS-500/GR-500 technology in action.

Patrick:

That was very cool! I haven't heard that song in ages! It made me go to the basement and dig out my "Please Don't Touch" LP. The recorded was recorded between Nov. 1977 and Feb. 1978. 30 years ago, wow!

The back cover says about the "Please Don't Touch" track: "For maximum effect this track should be listened to as loudly as possible with as much treble and bass as your system can muster - not to be played to people with heart conditions or those in severely hallucinogenic states of mind." He had a sense of humor. Smiley

Now, I have to watch the rest of these vintage Steve Hackett vids on YouTube.

Very cool John.  Steve Hackett has such an incredible writing style.  His work with Genesis both with Gabriel and Collins singing is amazing.  His solo work is awesome too!

The bass of the Taurus pedals (ala 'Clocks') with his searing Les Paul and Strat (although not used as much) tone are a sound that can't be beat if ya' ask me Wink.

I was at the Princeton Record Exchange in Princeton, NJ and I think I ended up buying about 10 of his records.  I didn't even know he made that many.

Princeton Record Exchange! You were only 20 mins. south of me. Let me know when you'll be around this way again.

Do you play any Genesis tunes? I've been working on Ripples.

Hi John,

I'm in NYC for the next month, but I'll be heading through Newark at some point, so I'll be sure to let you know when I'm in your area.  The Princeton Record Exchange is really cool...they've got a ton of records of all genres and most of them are priced very reasonably.  I'm a vinyl junkie just as much as a guitar junkie Cheesy.

I haven't worked on too many Genesis tunes, but I do know/improv most of the solo to 'Firth of Fifth' and some of the parts to 'Los Endos'.  I can also play 'Turn It On Again' in standard tuning, but I know Mike Rutherford wrote it in some weird tuning that I just can't figure out.  I know he uses drop D for just about everything.

Gotta love how they used about a million different tunings on their early stuff.

Ripples is an awesome song and it was great to hear them play it on the '07 tour.

If you're a Genesis fan, like me, and have enjoyed the new "Turn It On Again 2007" double CD,  then you'll probably be excited abput the soon to be released DVD of the last concert performed in that 2007 tour. It's called "When In Rome 2007" and is scheduled to be released in US retail outlets on June 10, 2008. Here's an excerpt of what to expect in the DVD set:

"Described by The Times as "Passionate, energetic, imaginative... Brilliant", Tony Banks, Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford of Genesis thrilled audiences across Europe with a series of Stadium performances that ended with a spectacular concert in Rome in front of 500,000 fans at the beautiful Circo Massimo on 14 July 2007.

This final spectacular European date was captured in a multi-camera shoot by director David Mallet. "When In Rome 2007" features Genesis classics such as "Land Of Confusion" and "Mama" to older Genesis repertoire "Los Endos", "Carpet Crawlers" and the haunting "Ripples"."

However, there's more good news! Something really special planned for die-hard Genesis fans in the US. There will be a limited showing of the film in selected theaters the night of June 9th. Here's the info: http://www.dandeentertainment.com/genesis.html

I never got to see the "Peter Gabriel" era Genesis, but it certainly was something! No wonder people doubted whether Collins could fill his frontman shoes...good grief, who could?

I'm really impressed with the quality of this recording. "Apocalyse in 9/8" was always a pretty ominous song, even without Peter's bizarre theatrics.

Hard to believe that "Follow You, Follow Me" came from the same band (sans Gabriel and Hackett). Don't laugh, I bought the And Then There Were Three album and that was the first tour that I saw them live.

That video is awesome!  Don't laugh at me John, but I think 'A Trick Of the Tail', 'Wind & Wuthering' & 'Duke' hold their own against the Gabriel era Genesis anyday.

I honestly favor Duke to all of 'em, but then again, that's probably just me Grin.

Here's a pic of the shirt I wore to the guitar show on Saturday.  I think it shows what I think of Steve Hackett Cheesy Grin.

Patrick:

The t-shirt was inspiring, but the chance to hear you play the "bits & pieces" of Genesis songs was very cool. (The Rush stuff was cool, too. But we'll save that discussion for the Rush appreciation thread Smiley)

So what do you think of the When In Rome DVDs?

Thanks John for the complements.  You sounded really good on the Genesis songs too.

I really like the 'When In Rome DVD'.  The bonus disc was pretty funny in showing how frustrating it was to play some of the old songs.  I also really enjoyed the setlist they chose for the tour.  It was a mix of everything you could have wanted (besides Gabriel and Hackett showing up Wink).  I wish Rutherford would have played a 2622 on one of the songs, but at least they are still using the Taurus pedals.  It still is amazing to see that they still have the same level of talent after all these years (although Collins can't sing as high as he used to Cheesy).

Genesis is one of my favorite progressive groups. "Horizons" was the song played at my wedding, and when my wife and I renew our vows in fours years, it'll either be that or Steve Howe "Mood for a day". Interesting little remembered band from the eighties call GTR with Hackett and Howe on board. Great Hackett tune on the album called "Hackett to bits". Bill

There are so many great Genesis songs. I always loved the organ in Watchers of the Skies. Check out the echo on Steve Hackett's guitar at 3:48.

As a true "progressive" rock fan...ie Genesis, Yes, Gentle Giant, Strawbs, Starcastle, etc. , "The lamb lies down on Broadway" will always be the most powerful, raw, truest, progressive rock statement of all times. Side one, album one, is about as creative as it gets...being a NYC boy, I always got chills if a band I was in covered "Back in NYC",  or when I heard it on the radio. It was the first Cd I bought when I started to convert my albums over to CD's in the eighties. The only other stuff that comes close for me would be "Animals" by PF or "Three friends" by Gentle Giant. Interestingly enough, I was going thru my"wax" the other day and found an interesting little obscurity "Swelled and Spent-the lamb lies down on Broadway live". Its apparently a bootleg I aquired somewhere along the way twenty or thirty years ago. I may have to hook up the ol' harmon kardon and give it a play. Its been so long, I dont even remember playing it. Smiley Bill
