My first electric was a green Roadstar II that I bought new in the mid-80s.  I've been playing Ibanez guitars ever since, but I only recently discovered the mystique surrounding Super 70 pickups.

I have an early 70s Ibanez 2350 LP copy that has one original pickup and one replacement. The original is a gray-wire model that I believe is a Maxon.

Is there a huge difference in sound between early '70s Maxon pickups and Ibanez Super 70s?  Since one pickup is not stock, I was thinking about swapping it our for a Super 70 if the opportunity presents itself.

Thanks.

Ibanez "Super 70" pickups made by Nisshin Onpa (Maxon) had a alnico 8 magnet.....Im under the impression that the Super 70 moniker was just added later for marketing purposes......

Thanks for the quick reply.

If I understand you correctly, my Maxon pickup and the Super 70 both have an alnico 8 magnet?

The Maxon might very well be a single coil......

So how early would there have been "Super 70" style pickups? I have two 2350-60 pickups, from around 1975/76. What's the difference between them and Super 70s?

The Maxon might very well be a single coil......

If the pickup has a single row of posts on the back side, would that indicate a single coil pick-up?

The guitar is from 1971 or 1972.

If it is a single coil, I'd imagine the Super 70 must sound quite a bit different.

Flat, not domed, polepiece screws = single coil.

First post. That explains the lack of power from my lead pickup. Thanks.  Wink

Not always...the early Maxon pickups ALL had flat pole pcs, even the "Real" 'buckers

I'll be prying the maxon apart later. There's a maxon stamp, and a serial, 12 zx 4 iirc. Comes from an Ibanez 2354 SG.  Smiley
