I know that Pat played some Artist 12 strings back in the late 70's and early eightie's but I had never seen him with a Semi-Hollow before. I know that it's hard to tell from this video but if it is an Ibanez can anyone verify which model?

It reminds me a lot of a 60s Epiphone or Gibson hollowbody more so than an Ibanez.

It remiinds me a lot of this Epiphone Sheraton or else a Gibson ES-335TD...I tend to think more along the lines of an Epiphone because of the mini-hb's and the plain headstock.

No offense meant Chazzy... But that video was a total waste of time, if you are trying to determine the guitar make and model. All you can make out is that it is a 335 style guitar....the rest is so fuzzy...that even CSI couldn't make out the details. Now on to more pertinent aspects of the video... Who does Lyle Mays hair? Looks like he spent hours preening that mane. The 80's...what a wonderful decade  |

This Gibson Custom ES-335 shows 60's block inlays: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Gibson-Custom-ES-335-Plain--60s-Block-Inlay--Slim-Neck--Electric-Guitar-518922-i1150273.gcI think that a 60's Gibson in 1983 is more likely than the ones above. I see no mini-humbuckers or old-fashioned tailpieces. IF there was a tulip headstock on this axe, it could be a Ritenour or a proto of it. I understood that the AS400 was also derived from a LR proto. I guess Lee Ritenour found it too heavy. Te image is pretty vague, however there are moments that you can see something that looks like a typical Gibson inlay. Ginger |

These are all good replies but remember that the guitar that Pat is playing on the vintage clip I posted was a twelve string. The reason that I'm leaning towards Ibanez is because I believe they made a few twelve string hollowbodies around that time and Pat was known to tour around with Artist Series twelve strings back then. I'm wondering if this obscure guitar is a rare model or prototype. Ginger and Juha made a good point bringing up the issue of the tulip headstock which would narrow our selection but the inlays have me scratching my head. Let's see who can resolve the Mystery. After looking at it again I'm almost 99.99% sure that this is a Gibson ES-335 12 string with a stop tailpiece and the pickguard removed.
Here's a pic to compare. The only other thing is that the headstock appears to only have half a triangle inlaid on the headstock.

And, the input and toggle switch are also in the same exact position as the vintage Gibson ES-335. Good call Patrick! Chazzy

Gotta find some vintage clips of PM playing with Gary Burton - when he was REAL young he was 2nd guitar behind Mick Goodrick, and PM played a 12 string. Years ago I bought a lot of PM videos and cds, boots and soundboards. A guy I dealt with a number of times offered me an electric Ibanez 12 string that had Pat Metheny inlaid down near the 20 fret. I BELIEVE it was a solidbody, like an Artist model. I've been following this dialog and I believe he was playing a Guild 12 when he was with Gary Burton and on some of his early 80s PMG gigs. I have a MJF video of PMG from '82. I'll dig it out and see if he's playing an electric 12 on it...
