Re: his tone

I'm starting to wonder if somehow the striped shirts don't have something to do with it  Wink

I saw a picture of Metheny on the cover of some guitar mag at the Guitar Center the other day. He looks exactly like Mel Gibson having a very bad hair day. I actually feel sad for artists who think they have to maintain their look from the 70's for anyone to recognize them these days. I'd rather they all cut their hair, like Peter Frampton did.

Did Frampton have a choice?

I thought he suffered from male pattern baldness.

But I do get your point, and agree.

The older you get, the less attractive long hair becomes.

But maybe, like Samson, Pat can't cut his hair  Wink

If the stripes were vertical, would he be playing classical guitar instead?

In another universe perhaps.

It's really bad for someone like Little Stevie from the Springfield band. When he tours with Bruce, he has to wear that same god-awful bandana, as if no one would recognize him or believe it was him otherwise. A whole slew of 80's hair band rockers come to mind too.

these guys could have more of a bruce willis attitude  Roll Eyes

back to the sound department:

pick alone can change tone dramatically.

- picking with the "wrong" (curved) side instead of the pointy side.
- increasing the angle between pick and strings (avoiding to pick "flat", which produces a "click" sound).
- using real heavy picks. an 1,5 mm pick sounds better than an 1 mm one. celluloid is much soft sounding than delrin.
- a light touch technique produces clearer and mellower tones.

http://www.ibanezcollectors.com/forum/the-player's-lounge/magic-is-in-the-pick!!!!/

By the way, I was surprised that hair (or any other physical feature, natural or voluntary), could have the smallest importance for members of this forum...I know myself enough to realise that my thinking and behaviour, as anyone's involved in musical activities and with artistic sensibility, are NOT exactly conventionnal. As an example, I'm 51, my hair is long, I do not care at all what kind of clothes I wear and I am resolutely politically incorrect. Is there something wrong?

May I suggest we keep our interest in MUSIC and/or GUITAR, whatever the age, sex, race, religion (or lack of it), language, phyisical aspect or any other sign of difference of the player, be he or she member of ICW or not?

In the list of things Petruz mentions
-Pat DOES use the "wrong" or curved side of the pick instead of the pointy side.
-Also over the years I have gotten a number of Pat's picks: some were discarded at gigs near the end of the last tune, some given to me by Pat personally and some I got from a DJ who had Pat visit his show promoting some album of his... Two were thin and the DJ ones a heavier plastic.
-I believe Pat uses a light touch.

As for anyone offended by the long hair, losing hair comments. Please relax and understand: - you might not realize it but the guys are just joking around (just like the jokes about the stripped shirts helping with Pat's tone). One must realize this IS an internationl forum and some members might not "get" the humor of members from another area. Next time you read something and feel offended or think it's out of line, just stop and remember humor sometimes does not translate well. From my experience on many years here as a member I cannot remember times when people were outright rude to each other: it's not that kind of forum. For the most part the members are older and have very varied taste in music and instruments.

I am sure no one here in America really believes Little Steven VanZant (also known to many American tv viewers as the Soprano Family Consigliere Silvo Dante) need worry about whether he's got hair or not. Due to his connection with Bruce Springsteen's band AND his long association with HBO's THE SOPRANOS he's quite famous in a couple of ways.

I'm 61 and surely I've seen a lot, but I don't let hair length (I used to have it down to my @!##) or color, gender or creed or nationality effect whether I like or dislike something. And I feel our membership here is the same way.

BY THE WAY: I've been trying like crazy to figure out how to download a sound file to YOU TUBE so you guys can hear a couple of the Donald Fagen/Pat Metheny clips I have. I figured the best one was the closing song, FM, and in that tune Pat's style is unmistakable and sounds rather IN PLACE with the song. I'll keep at it and post a link when I DO get it right. LOL

So I'll step down from the soapbox now. LOL... As a parting gift I will TRY to attach a great photo I shot back in 1990 of Pat at what was then called Villa Montalvo - this was Pat playing his old ES175 during the Parallel Realities Tour - venue rules allowed cameras that did not have flash attachments and only during the first 3 songs, so I got this photo (which here is a photo of the photo) while Pat was playing the 2nd tune of the set INDIGO DREAMSCAPES, and you'll see in the corner a guitar pick, one Pat tossed at the end of a song (when he broke it...). Lucky me... LOL.
