Hi Guys,

I was just wondering...does anyone know what Ibanez Pat is using in this photo?

I ask, because this is the Ibanez I've seen him play every time I've seen him live.  It looks like a natural JP-20 with a few modifications.

Just curious.

It is probably a custom made prototype for PM.

Korean made PM20 got some of its features.

Hahahahaha, maybe he isn't... thus the face!  Grin  Well, because he is Pat, he can make any face he wants!

Plus, if I could play like Pat, who know what kind of faces I would be making!  Wink

Now that looks very much like FG100 without bridge pickup, pickguard, wooden bridge, and metal tailpiece.

ok.. maybe it's a pointless statement because of too many 'without's.

But then...
it's been said that PM20 is originally based on FG100.  And when I searched catalogue pictures it didn't convince me enough because even the positioning of the pickup was different on top of the differences mentioned above.
Was this(FG100 -> PM20) just a myth or an officialy stated story?

By the way... I wouldn't mind that plastic tailpiece(maybe black metal?) although it looks ugly.
Sometimes unnecessary overtones noise from between the bridge and metal tailpiece bothers me.

What.....

The tailpiece is not plastic or black metal.

It is either carved Rosewood or Ebony.

Nice tailpiece...IMO.

I lilke the tailpiece as well, gives the guitar some character!
Is that binding around the headstock?

Here's another photo where he looks happier.  And yes, the headstock is bound.

I agree that it is a custom one-off...it does share similarities with the FG-100 and the JP-20.

I had opportunity to give a near look to the  pat ibanez , in the sound check of the Umbria festival,in Italy years ago, certainly it is not a PM 20, the PM20 has 22 frets and rosewood fingerboard, whereas the Pat prototype  has ebony fingerboard,   ebony tailpiece and 21 frets, she was similar to fg100, but with mahogany neck
Also it listens to a legend ,according to this ,the mic of Pat prototype is a clasic 57, that it was in the old  Pat 175 ,but I have my doubts on the matterI, hope to have been useful

Very interesting stbatz.  I had never heard of him using the Gibson pup from his 175 in his Ibanez.  I love his 175 sound on the early recordings...his Ibanez sounds much less trebly, but I'm sure it has something to do with him changing his amps as well.

You are right Patrick, I am in agreement with you about the old sound of Pat
I believe that the tour of " We Live Here"  was a little while decisive in the evolution of the sound of Pat,perhaps in that age I stop using acoustic 164 in stage, surely there are experts in Metheny here who can contribute to the subject
I believe that the stranger pick technical  of Mr Metheny, has to do much with its sound, beyond the guitar that uses
finally, I believe that Ibanez must reedit the prototype that usually uses Pat by respect for those who through the years  have collected, pm20, pm100 and pm120, certainly that the prototype of pat is not any of before named,if this happens someday, I buy surely it
greetings

I've read that this is the prototype to the PM20.  He pulled it out of the basement and used it over the recent years, and allegedly it has lead to the desire to create the new PM35 which is actually an Artcore Custom made in China.
