I just changed the V2 pickups in my 1981 AS50 to Super 58s and the sound is very trebly, thin and lacking bottom.  Do I need to make some other modifications to get a warm jazzy tone?  I'm kind of a novice at electrical work.

Hmm..Interesting. Is the tone control properly wired? What Cap value did you use? I roll my tone controls down to 2-4 to get a dark jazz tone. Also remember that a good pickup does not create the sound, it transmits the sound of the guitar. It can emphasize certain existing sound qualities. So a maple guitar is always going to sound brighter than a mahogany or spruce topped guitar. I can't get a warm Jim Hall type tone out of my AS80, but I can get more of a bright Wes or Sco type tone.

 Fennis,

I assume you're comparing the new Super58 tone with the old V2 tone. The V2's are seriously overwound beasts with a big bottom and driving mid-range. The Super58's WILL sound thin in comparison. Did you change anything other than the pickups? Do the Super58's have an extra lead (coil tap)?

Cheers
Steve

Not sure of the age of the Super 58s, but think they are from the 80's.  The tone is so thin and trebly that the the guitar is vitually unplayable.  Nothing else was done except the pickup swap.  I got the tone and volume controls with the super 58s but did not swap those out.  Did notice that the tone controls are push/pull, whatever that does?  I guess I should swap out the tone and volume controls and see what happens.
