I hope someone here can point me in the right direction.  I want to put some Paul Reed Smith pickups in my AR300.  The pickups have 3 wires plus a braided shield coming off them.  The original 58's have 4 wires which I believe are all needed for the tri-tone switching.  What options do I have for switching?  I was thinking of using humbucker/single coil/off for the 3 positions.  Does antyone here know if I can do this?

Thanks,
Jim

With the PRSs you could wire them humbucker/sigle coil/out of phase. That will give you a few additional sounds and the setup is simple - just a jumper wire from the humbucker setup. Go to the seymour duncan website for detailed schematics etc. great site for ideas on wiring etc.

I've got a PRS w/McCartys sounds really great!

Your AR300 should sound great. Good luck.

PS let me know if you want to get rid of the 58s.

Thanks Eric, that's a pretty good schematic.  I've never changed out the pickups in an Artist before, I assume the tri-sound switches are dpdt on,on,on(?).

I'm going to keep the 58's so I can bring it back to original, though I knew asking this question would result in people offering to buy them.  I actually expected groans from the purists (understandably, the 58's are excellent pickups).  I have 2 other Artists and a Musician with 58's, and I want something to push my Boogie a little harder.  I am putting a PRS HFS in the bridge position, but I haven't decided on a neck pickup yet.  Any suggestions?

Tri-sound switches are "special" DPDT:s, working on-on-on with central position being "irregular" on.. Nowadays obtainable eg. from Gotoh, Part n:o MS-500 XF
