Hi Jeff, Can you point our collective ears to any great examples of Ibanez guitar tone preserved for evermore on artist recordings? Which of the rostered Ibanez Signature artist records do you know for sure feature Ibanez guitars?? Outside of these, do you know of any other great Ibanez tones out there in record and CD land?? I must note that I am interested mainly in the guitars from the '70's and early '80's. Don't care much for the likes of Satch and Vai. Cheers, Mark

The Artwood Twin is all over the CD release of Kenso II, the japanese progressive fusion band.
Yoshihisa Shimizu (bandleader and main composer) poses with it in a live shot in the CD booklet but you can hear the 12-string part of it in many spots on the disc and though I know he played a Les Paul on some of the disc most of it was the Arty Twin.
I know Pat Metheny used the 12-string Artist guitar a lot in the early days and with unusual tunings, he used it quite a bit for the older Pat Metheny group songs when I saw him live in 1985.

Oh thanks for reminding me: the Roland G-303/G-808 guitars (Ibanez built) are all over King Crimson's "Discipline" CD and the Robert Fripp/Andy Summers "I Advance Masked" CDs, definetely worth a listen.

The Beckley Artwood Twin on "America Live", circa 1976.
And of course, just about every George Benson record, and every Steve Vai record, etc., etc.....

You can also hear the G-303/GR-300 on just about anything by Pat Metheny after '81. If you listen to the "Death Wish II Soundtrack" you can hear Jimmy Page use a G-808/GR-300 as well. Fripp and Summers loved to use 'em and you can hear it on The Police recordings such as "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and "Secret Journey". "I Advanced Masked" and "Bewitched" uses the GR-300 throughout. "Bewitched" has the GR-700 as well. Gotta love the old Roland gear . I'm amazed at the current prices of a GR-300 these days...a few years ago they could be had for under $500 and now they're bringing in over $1500! Also, you can hear Pat use the Ibanez 2618-12 on "The Way Up" during the eBow part in Part 1 as well as on "The Search" on American Garage. I've found my 2618 to be extremely useful for jazz...I've put on Flatwound 11's and it brings out a great dark jazzy tone that I didn't expect before I tried it. Patrick

I wished I'd never sold my Roland GR system on trade for a shred machine....
"it was the style of the times..."
The guitar was a G-202, a beautiful hunk of ash. I still have pictures so I should dig them up so you can see.
Paul Gilbert of course has many solo records with lots of Ibanez guitars on them, his "Get out of my Yard" release even has a vintage Artist on some of the tracks that he bought off of eBay. That's on Shrapnel records.
I have Larry Mitchell's first solo CD which shows a black Ibanez doubleneck with pink pickup covers and knobs, it looks like a 12-string on top 6 string on bottom with S body shape, on the back cover is a 6-string blue S model. There's a great track on there called "Political Rain" that I just listened to death, great tones and sounds and another similar track called "People, Places and Things". I think he was using Laney or Boogie amps on that release.
I believe Metheny also used the 2618-12 on the 12-string part of "As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls" from that record with Lyle Mays and Nana Vasconcelos.
Rik Emmett of Triumph used a AR2000 doubleneck on some of their later period work if I'm not mistaken.

AAAAAAGGGGGHHHHH!!! The G-202 is the only one I need to complete my vintage Roland guitar collection and the natural finish is what I'm looking for . I definitely would have made you an offer if you still had it and wanted to sell it. Please post pics! Patrick

I always thought I'd find another but the whole world of guitar-synths moved on sadly.

Here's a great video of Mike McCready of Pearl Jam using a 2387CT. I believe the pu's are original super 70's just with the covers removed. Enjoy!

I almost forgot: besides my Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Paul Gilbert CDs, I've got two CDs by Larry Mitchell.
The first on Grudge records is pretty cool, on the front it shows him playing a black 540-ish doubleneck with pink knobs. The 12-string neck looks longer in scale than the six string neck, whatever, it's nice. The back shows a jewel blue 540S.
There's this track on there called "Political Rain" that I've listened to over and over again. The rhythm guitar is thru a TC2290 delay that is hypnotic and the lead tone is just stellar (I'd wager a 540 thru a Quad preamp into the TC) with some tricky legato lines and great melodies.
There's some other great tracks on there too.
Then there's another CD "Mind Body & Soul" that has a white 540 on the front cover and a rougher rock sound with some urban grooves and some tricky guitar all over it.
So those two, too.

OK, you're making me want to go get the Crazy Train V out of it's protective case and bring it to a gig. I'll love it, but it's value will drop by a thousand dollars. Curse you!
