"But this goes to ELEVEN."

« on: July 05, 2008, 09:44:02 AM »

I was @!## at my girlfriend Fishwife.
It was 4th of July.
I went to GC, they were having a sale.
I saw this axe on the wall, they wanted $700.
I talked them down to $580.
George W. Bush just sent me a check for $600 so... I got the guitar, plus $20.
I made them gimme 2 sets of Ernie Ball super slinky .009's with it as well.
They wanted $80 for the case, I gave them $40.

It's soooooooooo solid.
You can feel the straightness of the neck, it's remarkable.
The whole board is outlined in this double white line and it's got that beat inlay in the neck there.
Heavy guitar.
REstimate 7 lbs.?
Nice, I like 'em heavy.
Top-of-the-line locking Grovers in the head.
Looks like a neck through but... I dunno, I think Schecter may give it that appearance but may not be "set" as we would normally think.
It's got the EMG's in it, which I usually shy away from but... what the heck.
I have no other axes w/EMG's so....

Why spend the $580 on an axe when I could use it for more imposrtant things?
Like I said, I was upset with Fishwife...
and I bought the axe. And... $580 don't amount to a dent in what I need financially.

It's nice, glad to have it.
Would recommemnd it to anyone actually.

Burled top.
Ebony board (I believe)
Active electronics.
One volume control for esach pup, with one master tone that hits both pups.
I like where they positioned the pup selector switch.
It's just a dandy.
It cranks, by the way.

Revamped in 2008... The new DEVIL CUSTOM's double-cutaway mahogany body features deep sculptured contours, accenting the guitar's sinister lines. A highly figured Solid Burl maple top adds to the 'looks that kill'.

A 25.5" scale 3pc Mahogany neck is set into the body with Schecter' popular UltraAccess neck joint, allowing access to the upper range. The 24-fret ebony fingerboard is inlaid with a 'devil's eye' at the 12th fret. The Devil is armed with the popular EMG 81/85 active humbuckers setup.

Other upscale features include a TonePros locking TOM bridge with Schecter's popular string-thru-body 'V' tail. Grover tuners and a Graph Tech nut add to the rock-solid tuning stability.

The Devil Custom is available in two transparent finishes: Blood Red Burst and Dark Amber Burst. MSRP: $949.00

If this photo posts, I got the one on the right.

That was supposed to be "Neat inlay" up there, not "beat"

and, obviously... only one axe photo posted but, it is the correct one.
My axe looks EXACTLY the same as photo posted.

Don't care much for the headstock design, but... I've seen worse.
I would prefer something more "reserved".

There's absolutley no way (just from looking) that it's not a neck-thru so...
whatever it is that they came up with there, it's pretty neat.

It's got sort of a carved top as well.

That looks like an interesting guitar.

I'm with you on the headstock shape, but they were shooting for 'sinistar'....  Roll Eyes

yep, whacky little head there.
still...
it's such a substantial instrument that I'm not letting it bug me and...
I could shave them points off and reshape/refin the head, if I was a lunatic, but....
i'll leave it alone. something like that would take apprx. 10 mins.
since it's not an Ibanez, if anything happens to it, I won't care and what i meant to say above was...
you can't tell no way no how that it's not a neck thru, just by looking at it.
it's completely impossible to tell.

it's a solid guitar.
it's way heavier than you would think, just from looking at it.

Manager at GC said, "they're not making them anymore, we're not getting anymore in and this one is the only one in a GC in the USA."

Well, I so completely doubt all of those things but... that's what he said.
That's gotta be complete nonsense and I have no idea why he would say something like that.,
It didn't impress me, it made me think he was a moron.

I've had a chance to knock it around a bit now.
Very very nice.
I'd recommend this model to anyone.
I think I did do good.
$580 for all the good points about this axe is pretty good.
My bass player has an Alembic, and Epiphone and a Schecter bass. I liked his Schecter so much, I considered getting one myself. It's a gorgeous guitar and it was like less than $500 so...
I was surprised at that and he is truly a spectacular bass player who takes his instruments very seriously. He got the Eppy as a knock around bass, but his Schecter was my first exposure to the quakity and afforbability.

I had no plans on buying a guitar when I went in there but I saw it, played it and then... you know what happens... you start going... "Man, this thing is actually very nice...." Since I got the $600 from W and I was in need of a sudden mood swing I bought it ands now that I've played it, I'm glad it's mine.

I'll post actually photos, it's a beautiful beautiful plece of wood.
The binding around the neck (and the whole "rectangle" of the neck is bound with the double white stripe) is really nice. That binding goes all the way up to and around the nut and all the way past the last fret. The neck is completely bound in those lines. Nice touch.
I like the "V" shape of the way the strings come thru the body.
Solid solid straight neck, It's an interesting neck in that there's no way to tell it's not a neck thru as we would normally think of one. This is something I'm going to look into, this Schecter neck. It's quite interesting. No heel, no joint, no nothing that you can see.
There's a volute at the headstock back.

It's a screamer. It cranks.
This axe in no way has the soul or sound of an Artist but since I had no axes with EMG's, I don't mind having one. It's another sound available to me that I didn't exactly have.
To me, EMG's are a bit sterile and lacking in soul but...
they crank in their own little way.

Solid guitar, good price, whacky headstock. Will post shots soon.
I think they make this one in S. Korea, ship it to Schecter in the USA and the USA guys get it ready for playing.
It's all set up and ready to go when you buy it. You see on the DSchecter USA sticker on the back plate that the guy who set it up, initials it. So, that was pretty good too.
The chrome is "blackened/smoked" so that looks pretty good too.
That's the bridge and the controls.

too bad the shots are on a cell phone under flourescent lights because the top is really beautiful.
when you have this thing in hand, it feels good right away, you know immediately you've got something there.
I wasn't really planning on buying a guitar when I went in there. It was one of those things where I saw it, I played it, I looked it over and then it just bugged the heck out of me.
I knew it was something significant, this axe and... it is.
for $580, I'm pretty sure I did well.
Eliminate costs and just focus on the axe, I know I did well.
Another sound available to me now, that I didn't have.
I think in a few years.... folks may be tracking these down.
The head has to go but.... I can live with it.
You get accustomed to it.

See the neck joint? I don't.
How do they do that?
Looks like a neck through.
But it ain't really.

and... thanx.

That neck joint looks like a couple of the higher end Squiers I remember seeing a few years ago.

I'm not sure how that neck joint is assembled.  Cool guitar and it definitely has a different look to it.
