I asked him what made them so special and he really didn't know, beyond, "I think they're like Gibson PAFs". I think he thinks he's entered in a starting price in Yen, not dollars. I replied back asking him directly if he thinks he'll get $600 for the pair.

Greco Dry Z pups are renowned as one of the best humbuckers out.  I'm not so sure about the price on these, but I have seen them sell for around $450 a pair.

I'm not bothered by these, but some people are very very very in love with this particular pickup. Not many were made, and from what I have seen, they go for very high prices. If you need a set of these to restore a rare, high-end Greco to original specs, you can't exactly pop down to your local shop and get a replacement set.

I wouldn't pay that price myself, but, I can't believe someone would take the time out of their day to write an email berating an ebay seller about his asking price. The seller seems to know his stuff and trade exclusively in MIJ guitars. Personally, I would defer to his knowledge of the market and put more effort into understanding why he has priced them this way instead of assuming he doesn't know what he's doing.

Awww c'mon now - berating? How do you get that from this discussion? Unless you were privy to the email in question that's quite a stretch don't you think?

Sure. As long as the email didn't read something like, "Hey you stupid crackhead - why are these pickups so expensive? Are you an idiot? Are you insane? No one in their right mind is going to pay that price for these. I'll give you $525.00 for them."  Wink

Now that's berating. But I'm fairly certain no one here said anything like that to this seller. Berating is best left to professionals - and besides, how do you know he isn't a crackheadCheesy

Well, triumph knows it all   Grin

After reading Snowjays' post I remembered I have read about very good Greco pickups, these and others, when looking for guitar info on the Net. If I remember it right (some) Greco and Burny LP copies were involved.

But then for US $600+ they have to be better than excellent.

Look, "Crackhead" can be taken in many different ways, not all of which are berating, such as, "Hey! You're no longer a crackhead!"

Actually, Triumph, I'm really a very polite person. While I don't have the messages I sent, the first was along the lines of asking if the seller had links to sites where I could learn more about Dry Z pickups. He didn't, and then I did offer the opinion that I felt they were overpriced. (I think I wrote, "I think these are overpriced.") Upon reading Snowjays post, I re-replied to the guy letting him know a friend had told me about the pups, that they go for around $450 a pair, and good luck with the auction.

It's not all Greco pickups that are so expensive. In fact, some Greco pickups are identical to Ibanez during the Super 70's period. It's just this particular rare Greco pickup called Dry-Z.

Here is a link to a UK seller offering Dry-Z pickups:

Scroll to the bottom of the page. Here is the text to save you a click:

Out of kindness, I suppose?
