Absolutely. I don't think the manufacturer of a particular brand is ever 100% cut & dried. As far as Rokkomann/Maya is concerned there's no solid evidence of the Rokkomann factory & its destruction in the Hanshin earthquake, & until such evidence comes to light we're just making assumptions about the origin of Maya / El Maya & associated brands. There's every possibility that other factories were used as well as the plant in Kobe.

J.

We could ask them...
I found their phone number, their CEO and some business activities:
Rokkomann, Inc.--Kitanagasadori 5-3-1, Chuoku, Kobe, Japan. Telephone: Kobe (078) 351-2000. Shokichi Kido, pres. Trak drums, Asturias guitars, plus stands, mics, cables, etc.

Hi - what country are you in? Could you post some more pics of the SG, please - clear & detailed shots of hardware, fretboard, neckplate, headstock, etc would be good. Is the end of the fingerboard round or square-cornered, and can you tell what type of material the body's made from? If it's ply you should be able to see the layers at the edges of the body.

This might be relevant to the "Columbus" thread. Smiley

Thanks for that - not relevant to the Columbus thread (not the same as the Columbus SG I had years ago, which I thought/think might've been Rokkomann in origin) but interesting & good to see all the same.

A couple of details make me think this is quite an early example - the stop-bar tailpiece is bolted through instead of being open, and it has a round-cornered fretboard & position markers up to the 17th fret. These features are much more common on early 70s MIJ guitars - more accurately copied fretboards are common after about 1973. The bridge is very unusual but I'm inclined to think it's not original.

The neck construction's interesting - 3-piece necks are common on many copies of this era, but what you usually see is a centre section of the same timber, turned so the grain lies opposite to the other two parts. Yours looks like it's 2 different types of timber, possibly maple sides & a mahogany centre, similar to a Rickenbacker 4001 neck build. I'd say this is pretty unusual on a Gibson copy.

I can't be sure but I don't think the body's ply - I can't see edge layers. The top's a separate veneer but it's probably a "butcher block" timber body underneath.

Guitars like this are hard to put a specific value on, but this certainly looks like a nice quality instrument.

So you did. Unfortunately that's an entirely inaccurate and unresearched listing. It's NOT from 1968 (and if you've read anything here, you should know that) and Rokkomann had NO connection with Ibanez. And there never has been an "Ibanez factory".

If you don't know something, and haven't taken the trouble to research, why make things up? Huh

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/y_PZPpWTRTU&rel=1" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/y_PZPpWTRTU&rel=1</a>

The guitar is pre-1975 or even pre-1974.
I'd say it's from 1970-1973.

Mentioning Ibanez is keyword spamming.
I have seen several Dutch advertisements mentioning the "Gibson strings", just to get attention. Maybe that's an idea, Ed.

Not if you put indeed GIBSON strings on your guitar and show the wrapping.

Then it is not an infringement, but an EXACT description of a FEATURE.

Besides, vintage Gibson .010-.045 strings are special because of their tension balance.

That means that they won't cause neck torsions. Definitely worth mentioning in an ad.

They don't sell these gauges anymore, although the calculations are almost PERFECT.
Another interesting set that is available now, is the Gibson Dickey Betts: .010-.044
http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Divisions/Gibson%20Gear/Strings/Legendary%20Series/Dickey%20Betts/
Looks like he's been calculating too...
