I started playing at the age of 10 (I'm 45 now) and to me, talking about and reading about guitars or just looking at them (it was on this site that I first read the phrase "guitar porn") has always been part of the fascination. I can't help feeling though, that right now things have gone a little out of proportion and that I should spent more time actually playing. Maybe ICW is partially to blame for this, too. Don't get me wrong, I love this site - I've learned A LOT, I bought my AS193 ("one of 141"!!!) because of this site and  I've "met" some nice people here, too.

Don't fret my fellow Ibanezers - I'm not going away (thought certainly one person here wouldn't miss me at all  Wink), but maybe you'll see me here less often in the future...

You could have skipped that post and just "shut up and played your guitar" but then that would not be annoying.  Looking forward to you playing your guitar more

Reminds my associative brain of this one:

Huh? Was that 28 years ago? Oh, my God. We're really getting old...

Return of the Son of Shut Up 'n' Play Yer Guitar! Grin

Anyone else ever notice that the "Shut up n play" titled solos from that album seem to be extended "Inca Roads" solos?

Yeah - guess I'm a real sucker for punishment!
(Note to self: mention discovering my masochistic trait in next meeting with The Shrink!)  Grin

I must humbly admit that my knowledge of the opus of the late great Frank Z. is limited to "Overnite Sensation" and some othe bits here & there - I just thought that title was appropriate...

Yep, that's exactly what it is.  I love that record, all of those Zappa solos extended to mars and beyond.

I read an interview with Frank back in the early eighties where he explained what he did for the "Joe's Garage" album, and it's my contention that those experiments led directly to his changed lead/solo style of the late '70s and beyond. What Frank did was to take a guitar solo track from a live performance and marry it to rhythm tracks created in the studio. Thus, when he calls Joe's solos "imaginary guitar solos" he means it. They were never actually played the way you hear them on the record.

What Frank didn't explain, but what I surmize, is that he started those experiments on the "Sheik Yerbouti" album. There are two tracks on that album, the first being "Rubber Shirt" (where he takes a 4/4 drum track and synchs it to a 7/8 bass solo) and the solo to "Your Mama", where he first used the combination technique. My contention is that these experiments came out so well, and the "Joe's Garage" album solos came out so friggin' fantastic (think, "Outside Now" and "Watermelon in Easter Hay") that he literally changed the way he played guitar solos from that point on. Compare the amazing but on-the-beat solos for "Black Napkins" or "Rat Tomago" with the "unstuck in time" solos on the "Shut Up n Play..." discs and beyond. They are fundamentally different constructions, and yet, equally amazing.

By the way, this is an invaluable link for any Zappafile:

Chuck

I'll gladly hand over this thread to you and Frank Z.!
In the future, I'll be more careful when naming my threads - maybe I'll start another "IbanezCollectorsWorldaholic Anonymous"-thread elsewhere. Or maybe you could do that for me - I guess you're at least as qualified as I am... Cheesy

(And for some reason I still can't quite comprehend, threads started be me tend to either get hijacked and/or end up in utter desaster Wink )

Threads morph, Toms. They go their own directions. Also, your original posting pretty much just made a statement and didn't spawn a lot of comments. Plus, I'm a huge Zappa freak.  Wink

Hey - I wasn't complaining at all!  Smiley
I've learned the hard way about threads morphing (or sould I say: mutating?  Wink)

When I started this thread I thought, maybe others here felt the same so we could start a self-help group and meet here on a regular basis...  Grin

(no offense inteded to anyone here who might suffer from a REAL addiction - I'm pretty well aware of the problems!)

I used the technique of a solo from one track to a different background on my
track "casting shadows", if you see my myspace page you can hear a bit of it:

I was inspired by FZ quite a bit growing up and the "shut up" series is a longtime
favorite.  The tones on "Joe's Garage" are hard to beat too.
