I have a shot at a Scruggs. What should I pay for one in decent shape?

With case... dunno about the logo yet. I haven't seen it yet. I know about the vine because that was my first inquiry. I know about the condition because I trust the fellow's judgment. I have never owned or purchased that model so... that's why I am counting on you guys to make sure I don't spend more than I should. I have owned a bunch of axes over the years so my general knowledge will help but I have basically no experience with this particular model. I've seen 'em here on ICW and that's it. I like what I've seen and I think I can get it at a fair, if not better price because I am pretty sure at this point, from my conversations with seller that he really doesn't know exactly how cool of a guitar he has. My gut feeling right now is that I may be able to acquire it for between $750-$800. But... I just want to make sure I don't pay $1500 if top value on a mint one is gonna be $1000. My concern is to not pay more than is necessary. I guess I won't mind paying exactly what it's worth either, as long as I know what that is. Thanx for your help so far... everyone. I wish I had a photo to post, I am working on it. Please explain how the logo and other aspects may affect the value. I have done business with seller before so... he's a decent bloke and I have no concerns dealing with him. He's a good guy.

The Scruggs is in, I will check it out before 5pm today, it's 1 pm my time in NY right now so... if anyone has any further insight, please let me know. I wanna pull the trigger on it today (Jan. 16, 2006) Hep me! Hep me! Hep me! What should I be looking for as far as the "good stuff." I'll have to use a credit card and worry about it later but... if it's a keeper, as usual, I will wreak havoc on my finances.

Bobzilla,
I've read your posts here long enough to know that you yourself can judge the "good stuff" If the guitar is in decent shape and your can get it for between 800-900 dollars, you stole it. You are talking about a scruggs with a vine here. They DO NOT come up everyday and anything with a vine carries some serious value to it. If the guitar was in good to excellent shape paying 1500 would even be a good deal in my opinion. I have seen prime examples of these hit over 2k. @!## the 2681 Weirs with the vine (which I consider the scruggs sister guitar, they are both heavy pieces of "professional" Ash :-) have hit over 3k for the best conditioned ones.

Hey Johns, isn't it you who has that scruggs with the most insane grain pattern I have ever seen? Throw up a shot of that here to whet Bobzilla's appetite.

Back to Bobzilla (spider ;-) ,
To summarize, IMHO, Scruggs vine guitars are in the top 5 Ibanez guitars EVER built. (Boy will that comment open up a discussion).

My other Tops (no particular order):
2681
AR500/5000
2617
MC500/550

God there are so many more, but as you can tell I am a 76-82 solidbody guy, and to me Ibanez does not get better than that. The Scruggs is exhibit 1A to that statement.

Jeff, can't thank you enuff. Yes, I had some insight no doubt but ... wanted the insight of an expert. Yes it's vined, that's all I know. I've got abot an hour b4 I have the thing in hand (I am taking off work early because I am distracted by the guitar.) My funds are seriously seriously depleted due to these 2 axes I bought from Viet Nam or Taiwan or wherever but... I like the Scruggs, it's vined, can't wait to see it, hope it's in good shape, I haven't even seen photos, I am working off a description. Thanx there Jeff.

"A Scruggs in the hand is worth..." oh never mind.

I agree, Bob... go with your gut. It should be much easier to assess it in person, than with pix on the net.

You can always sell off something else. I'll help you!

Jeff:

Is the guitar you are referring to?

Scruggs

I agree that the Scruggs with vine should be at the top of the list of collectible guitars. I don't know if I can get my personal favorites list down to just 5, though. :-)

yup, thats the one John! The straight, close together grain is just fantastic! I have never seen any scruggs or other ash grain that is remotely similiar. That guitar is smokin'!
