Hey,

I want to replace the pickups on my '83 AM-205. The pickups that came with it from the previous owner are Seymour Duncan's. I'd like to put the original type of pickups back into it.

Any ideas where i can find a set? Any ideas on replacement hardware also?

Thanks,
Brian

Brian,

you can order a new set from any Ibanez dealer, or watch ebay for an old set. The older 58s sound a little different. And the new version does not have the 3 hole mounting system.

Hey Sven,

Do you happen to know if Ibanez offers the Super 58 with a gold cover? Just curious.

Thanks,
Darryl

Trumpus, which Seymour Duncans are in your AM?

Wildfield, yes they are available in gold.

Brian, you can get pretty much all the hardware from Ibanez. Gibralter II bridge, Quickchange II tailpiece, suregrip knobs, all still available. Which tuners does it have? does the screw hole line up under the tuner, or is it offset to the side?

Trumpus,

I have a set of Super 58s that I had ordered from Ibanez to put into a LP (replacing the Super 70s). I never swapped out the Super 70s so they are available if you're interested. They are brand new Super 58s that are MIK. There is also a MIJ version. These use two mounting holes (as opposed to 3). Send me an email if you're interested.

Does anyone know if there is an appreciable tonal difference between the Super 58 MIK vs MIJ?

AGR would you mind posting a pic of the MIK 58. I would like to see the back of it?

Ibanezfreak1960, the back of the pickups are competely wax filled. There is a sticker on the back that indicates SP-58-F and SP-58-R. I was told that the F was the bridge pickup and the R was the neck pickup. Will post picks over the weekend.

Agr:

I would have thought that "F" stood for "Front" or neck and the "R" for "Rear" or bridge. Oh well, maybe it makes sense in Japan or Korea. :-)

John,

I would have thought the same. However, my pickups came packaged from Ibanez as follows...

part numbers as follows:

Part# 3PU1C158G1 (sticker says SP-58-F)
Part# 3PU1C158G2 (sticker says SP-58-R)

I think that G1 and G2 stand for Bridge and Neck respectively. After researching on this site I found this summary from our old friend Spiro (miss that guy)...

part numbers as follows:

japan 3PU1J158G1 Bridge
japan 3PU1J158G2 Neck

Korea 3PU1C158G1 Bridge
Korea 3PU1C158G2 Neck

That being said, the wrapping job on the pickups was not very upscale. They may have switched the pickups accidently. I have an AS80 Artstar that has the same pickups in chrome...I'll have to check those pickups the next time i change the strings.

AGR, are you sure the "C" in 3PU1C158G1 doesn't mean China?

Sven,

Check out this link to a previous discussion on this.

http://www.ibanezcollectors.com/discus/messages/16/6266.html

The feeling was that the Super 58s (Cs) were made in Korea at the time. Of course this was when the Artstars were made in Korea...made more sense back then. With manufacturing shifting mostly to China recently, is it possible that they have moved production of these pickups to China as well? The extra Super 58s that I have were purchased in April 2004 and most likely manufactured in 2003.

Funkle, the C means Korean manufacture. The J means Japan manufacture

The Super 58's in Artcore Customs are China production.
