It's just a double coil pickup, which you can switch from two serial coils to one single coil to two parallel coils. You could listen what the results are for your perception. The parallel effect is comparable to what happens if you put a 5-way switch in the position 4 or 2, or a Telecaster or a Les Paul in the mid position. What it sounds like on the bass would be a surprise to me too. I guess like the mid position on a jazz bass. Mostly the single coil gives the clearest sound (AND more hum). Middle position is the "parallel" humbucker, and "up" is the single coil.
