Hello,

this is my first post to this site. I am looking to buy a left handed musician. The person selling it to me has told me it was hand made in the ibanez german factory in or around 1982. Its a beautiful bass, defo more flexable than my precision and a fantastic sound. We havent got around to discussing prices yet and i'm wondering if any one would have idea's of the bass's worth. Going through the internet i have come across very few lefties and those were all japenese bulit. Any help at all would be fantastic. Thanks.

Welcome to the Ibanez jungle! :-)

To my knowledge there is no (or ever was an) Ibanez German factory. If it truly is from 1982, then chances are it was made in Japan.

You have to supply some more info for us to help. First, the serial number. Second, upload some pictures. If pictures are a problem then an extremely detailed description of the bass.

Here's a link to the 1981 catalog showing the Musician basses. The MC924 is shown as a lefty, also. Anything look familiar?

thanks for the reply johns, could you post that link up again as it doesnt seem to have made it on your post, thanks. was meant to meet the seller today but had to postpone till tomorrow. Will post up any more info i get. I don't think he is telling me any untruths about the bass's origins, i've probaly misunderstood the info i got. I came across it about two years ago when the guy let me borrow it for a weekend and i've been trying to get him to sell it to me since!! The main problem is we've never been able to agree a price so i was hoping someone might be able to give me a few pointers.

hello,

have the serial number for the bass now, it is B815188 and it says certified in japan on the headstock. Does that provide any clues?

Geoff:

Yes, it tells us that the bass was manufactured in Feb. of 1981. Did you check that link I posted above? It shows the Musician basses that were avaiable in in 1981. Although it only shows the MC924 in a lefty version, I'll bet you could have ordered the MC824 or MC940 in lefty, also.

So, does your's have 3 or 6 control knobs?

hello johns,

it looks pretty identical to MC924, same control arrangement. i reckon its been refretted pretty recently but all seem to have bedded down quite nicely. i have the bass for the next week or so which is good but when i picked it up off the seller i didn't have much of a chance to chat to him 'casuse he was pretty busy getting ready to head off for a week abroad. when he comes back i'll chat to him properly about the bass's history but i do rember him saying when he intially talked about selling it (about two years ago) that he got direct from the factory in germany in 82 and it was custum handmade for him. Maybe possibly i've got the wrong end of the stick or misinterpeted (he's a very nice guy but kinda obtuse so therefore sometimes not the easiest to understand) but will post up an update when i get a chance to chat to him.

have just talked to the seller. i had the wrong end of the stick all together. it was purchased as new in 83 in london. he had looked at getting a midi pickup done in germany some time later, i apoligise for my terrible memory!! Anyways, any idea's on what would be a fair price for a standard 1981 mc924L lefty in very good condidtion and recently refretted?
